Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare upper and lower limbs muscle activities during lateral and
longitudinal movement in sport climbing. For this study, we selected five sport climbing athletes(n=5).
We measured the muscle activity at Latissimus dorsi (LD), Biceps brachii (BB), Flexor carpi radialis (FCR),
Extensor carpi radialis (ECR), Vastus lateralis (VL), Tibialis anterior (TA), and Medial gastrocnemius (MG).
The statistical analysis methods were paired t-test and Wilcoxon test. During lateral movement, average
muscle activities significantly higher than longitudinal movement: BB at phase4 (p=.008) and VL at
phase2 (p=.026). During longitudinal movement, average muscle activities higher than lateral movement:
BB at phase1 (p=.017), phase3 (p=.043), and phase4 (p=.035), FCR at phase1 (p=.001), phase2 (p=.003),
phase3 (p=.013), and phase4 (p=.026), ECR at phase1 (p=.002) and phase3 (p=.013), TA at phase3
(p=.044) and phase4 (p=.034), and MG at phase2 (p=.019). These results are expected to a reference
data in the training and injury prevention considering each type of sport climbing.
